RECREATION
Outdoor amenities are excellent with resorts, historic sites and natural features all readily available. Hunting Island State Park, Edisto State Park, Hilton Head Island, Folly Beach, Seabrook Island, Fripp Island, Isle of the Palms, Edisto Beach and Sullivan’s Island are just a few of the popular attractions. The Lowcountry of South Carolina is known for having one of the largest populations of whitetail deer and is also popular for duck, turkey, dove, quail and hog hunting.
AMENITIES
Once known for an agricultural wealth of rice and indigo; manufacturing, transportation, logistics and other port-related businesses are now staples of the Lowcountry economy. The Port of Charleston is one of the 10 busiest US ports, handling over $60 billion in good annually. Major companies operating here include Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Marathon Petroleum, Mercedes-Benz, Westrock, Blackbaud and COSCO. The Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps all operate facilities in the Lowcountry. North Charleston features the region’s largest volume of retail sales. Gullah, Caribbean, African and Native American cultures heavily influence the Lowcountry.
HISTORY
Hampton County was named in honor of general and former governor Wade Hampton III and created in 1878, making it the 33rd of South Carolina’s 46 counties. In 1912, the county was reduced in size as Jasper County was established. Within the last 10 years, Jasper County has experience rapid development and is now the second-fastest growing county by population in South Carolina.
CLIMATE
South Carolina features a humid subtropical climate highlighted by hot summers and mild winters. Precipitation is abundant year-round with coastal areas receiving more rainfall during the summer months.
